چکیده

A variable-porosity suction glove has been flown on the F-16XL-2 aircraft to demonstrate the feasibility of this technology for the proposed High-Speed Civil Transport. Boundary-layer transition data on the titanium glove primarily have been obtained at speeds of Mach 2.0 and altitudes of 15,240–16,764 m (50,000–55,000 ft). The objectives of this flight experiment have been to achieve 0.50–0.60 chord laminar flow on a highly swept wing at supersonic speeds and to provide data to validate codes and suction design. The most successful laminar flow results have not been obtained at the glove design point, a speed of Mach 1.9 at an altitude of 15,240 m (50,000 ft); but rather at a speed of Mach 2.0 and an altitude of 16,154 m (53,000 ft). Laminar flow has been obtained to more than 0.46 wing chord at a Reynolds number of 22.7×106. A turbulence diverter has been used to initially obtain a laminar boundary layer at the attachment line. A lowersurface shock fence was required to block an inlet shock from the wing leading edge. This paper discusses research variables that directly impact the ability to obtain laminar flow and techniques to correct for these variables.

Aerodynamic Noise Computation of the Flow Field around NACA 0012 Airfoil Using Large Eddy Simulation and Acoustic Analogy

The current study presents the results of the aerodynamic noise prediction of the flow field around a NACA 0012 airfoil at a chord-based Reynolds number of 100,000 and at 8.4 degree angle of attack. An incompressible Large Eddy Simulation (LES) turbulence model is applied to obtain the instantaneous turbulent flow field. The noise prediction is performed by the Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings (FW-...

Numerical Simulation of Separation Bubble on Elliptic Cylinders Using Three-equation k-? Turbulence Model

Occurrence of laminar separation bubbles on solid walls of an elliptic cylinder has been simulated using a recently developed transitional model for boundary layer flows. Computational method is based on the solution of the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and the eddy-viscosity concept. Transitional model tries to simulate streamwise fluctuations, induced by freestream turbulen...

Wind Tunnel Investigation of Pressure Distribution and Transition Position of a Swept 3D Wing

Extensive wind tunnel tests are conducted to evaluate surface pressure distribution of a semi span swept wing. The wing section has a laminar flow airfoil similar to NACA 6-series airfoils. The investigations are conducted at various speeds and angles of attack. Surface pressure distribution over the wing upper surface is measured for both chordwise and spanwise sections. Statistical analyses a...

Use of a Mariotte bottle for the experimental study of the transition from laminar to turbulent flow

A Mariotte bottle is a device that provides a constant effusion velocity for liquids. We discuss a Mariotte bottle that has been designed to study the flow regime and the transition from laminar to turbulent flow. Several straight, smooth, circular glass tubes with different lengths and sections were inserted into the lower part of the bottle so that the rate of flow could be measured in very d...

Dynamic and Deformation of a liquid Droplet in a Convective Two-Dimensional Laminar Flow

The objective of this research is to develop an accurate numerical method to be used in showing the deformation of a liquid fuel droplet in a convective field. To simultaneously solve the internal liquid droplet flow field as well as the external gas phase flow field, a nonstaggered rectangular grid system without any coordinate transformation is used. Transition from the gas field to the liqui...
